Tonight on TCM

TV Alert: The 1996 film adaptation of Emma, starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeremy Northam, and Toni Collette, will air at 10:00 pm tonight on Turner Classic Movies.

On a side note, I have no idea when they started including movies from the 90's on TCM. As much as I love Austen adaptations, I really don't think they should be playing this film on this channel. I haven't felt this way since I heard Nirvana on what used to be a "classic rock" station! I just hope TCM doesn't go the way of AMC...

PBS is doing the complete Jane Austen over the next few months on Masterpiece Theater. My local station in MD said that it is beginning next Sunday the 13th @ 9pm. I think Emma is first. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/austen/index.html

Thanks Jennifer! I was actually just about to write a post on that...

I agree that they shouldn't play Emma on TCM, as it's by no means a film people will study in film school for years to come, but I don't have a problem with them showing more modern stuff. As long as it can already be considered a classic, I think it's fine. Things like Schlinder's List, Blade Runner, Star Wars. But yet, it will be awful if it turns into AMC...

Hi Zoe,

I agree that "modern classics" are allowable, but it is such a slippery slope that I would like to see them stick to more stringent criteria. Very few movies over 20 years old belong on this channel!
